DESIRE: a mnemonic for setting successful goals

Direction

Move towards the positive
Focus on what the client wants rather than on what he/she is trying to avoid

End point

Describe what success will look and feel like

Stretch

Make the goal a stretch… but within the client’s reach

Influence

Shape the goal around what the client can influence

Resources

Specify the resources needed and those already possessed
Internal and external resources

Effort

Weigh up the costs and benefits of achieving this goal…
And the costs and benefits of doing nothing
