Life Styles Inventory™

What Human Synergistics International says about the LSI

The LSI helps individuals to strengthen thinking and behavioural styles that promote their effectiveness, and to moderate styles that will prevent them from realising their potential. The LSI provides invaluable and otherwise unavailable information that can motivate, guide and track the progress of self-development initiatives.

The LSI is most frequently used for:

  • Promoting self-understanding and guiding self-development
  • Improving capabilities as a team member or individual contributor
  • Providing feedback for stress management programmes

How it works

You must be accredited by Human Synergistics to use the LSI. Once accredited, you can either buy hard copy survey booklets (questions and answers in one document) or get the client to do the whole thing online. Once the questionnaire is completed, you need to send it off to Human Synergistics for scoring. The website does say that there’s a hard copy, self-scoring option, but I have never used this. When the scoring is completed, the report comes back to the coach and/or the client. Client and coach can then meet to discuss the results, the extent to which the client is using Constructive, Passive or Aggressive styles, and the implications of this for the client.

Why I use the LSI

  • It differentiates between effective and ineffective styles of thinking and behaving
  • It is supported by research that differentiates between the kinds of profiles that allow people to operate successfully in organisations and those profiles that are linked to individual stress and failure. This background research gives the tool real weight when you’re working with a client who has a Passive or Aggressive profile. It helps the coach to demonstrate that there is a cost to that client of choosing not to change style
  • It describes how we think about ourselves (our self concept), who we believe we are and how this influences our behaviour. This really helps those clients who like to describe their behaviour as being a product of “the system” or of everyone else around them. The LSI helps them to recognise that they choose to behave in the way in which they behave - they’re not just helpless puppets of the organisation
  • It has a 360° feedback questionnaire to be completed by others. This enables the client to compare his/her self picture with the picture others have of him/her. This helps reduce any blind spot that the client may have and sometimes reveals strengths that the client has failed to recognise
  • It produces results in a clear diagram rather than in prose so it’s a great tool for those who see things more visually and means that the results can be understood readily
  • It produces a picture of where the client is now and who the client is in his/her current context and it recognises that we can take steps to change who we are and what we’re doing
  • By repeating the questionnaire towards the end of the coaching programme, coach and client can measure how much the client has changed since the coaching started
  • The tool is well supported in terms of stand alone explanatory resources that the client can take away from the coaching session.
