The Psychology of Executive Coaching – Theory and Application: Bruce Peltier

The book aims to provide a conceptual foundation for an executive coach, translating psychotherapy theory into coaching practice.

It is targeted at both therapists and counsellors who want to expand their practice into the corporate world, and business people who want to enhance their coaching skills. The book takes a number of psychotherapy theories and assesses their applicability to executive coaching.

Why I rate this book

I am neither a therapist nor a counsellor and so I have no idea how useful the book might be viewed from either of those perspectives. However as a business person and experienced executive coach, I found this book to be a great “one-stop shop” to give me a very basic introduction to a number of psychological schools of thought, and enough information about each of them to help me to decide which of them had more appeal for my coaching practice and therefore would repay further research.

As well as an introduction to, and assessment of, how various theories might inform coaching practice, the book gives one of the clearest and most helpful distinctions I have seen between therapy and coaching. There is also some really thoughtful material on coaching women in business, particularly around communication style.

Overall, the book is a well-written, easy-to-read reference text for the coach who is not a trained psychologist, therapist or counsellor – highly recommended.
